Fort Boyard

At the time of writing you can not visit the fort with a private boat so we did not go. You need to book and go with a charter tour.

The history of the fort goes back to 1661 when Louis XIV wanted defensive outposts with increased artillery range. Due to extreme cost the project was abandoned in 1667. In 1757 construction was resumed but abandoned again for the same reasons as before. Napoleon Bonaparte resumed construction 1800, but again it was abandoned in 1809. Finally, in 1837 construction was resumed and then completed in 1857. The fort has been featured in movies and Tv-shows.
