Wreck Spulga https://navlex.com/properties/wreck-spulga/ https://navlex.com/properties/wreck-spulga/#respond Wed, 03 Jun 2026 00:29:36 +0000 https://navlex.com/properties/wreck-spulga/ The vessel, which was typically stationed in Riga, was en route to a naval visit in Karlskrona.

Alert MRCC 001102 was issued to the search and rescue services.

The Coast Guard vessel Spulga ran aground for unknown reasons and became waterlogged. With the assistance of a helicopter, representatives from the Swedish Coast Guard and the Latvian Navy were lowered to the distressed vessel. Subsequently, the Coast Guard was able to remove 13 cubic meters of bunker oil from the ship. The oil was pumped into large bags and taken aboard one of the Coast Guard’s environmental protection vessels.

A few days after the grounding, representatives from the Latvian Navy and the Red Company decided to attempt to tow Spulga off the ground outside Utklippan. Shortly after the towing operation commenced with the help of the Coast Guard, the vessel developed a severe list and sank, three nautical miles northwest of Utklippan. The representatives from the Red Company and the Latvian Navy who were on board had to evacuate the ship in haste.

After the sinking (November 2, 2000) the location was marked with a red buoy, although the wreck does not pose any obstruction to navigation.

The vessel is nearly upright on the seabed at a depth of approximately 44 meters. It remains largely intact and offers much to observe, as it has not been long since it sank. The Coast Guard’s pumps are still located at the stern following attempts to salvage the vessel. Since she is situated on the “open” sea, the location can be quite sensitive to weather conditions and winds; it can also be rather turbulent on the way down. It is possible to seek shelter at the islet if the weather becomes particularly severe.

Wreck S/S King https://navlex.com/properties/wreck-s-s-king/ https://navlex.com/properties/wreck-s-s-king/#respond Wed, 03 Jun 2026 00:29:35 +0000 https://navlex.com/properties/wreck-s-s-king/ The S/S King is a remarkable wreck that stands upright on the seabed at depths ranging from 38 meters to 28 meters. She sank in 1941 during salvage operations from the cliffs where she ran aground. The vessel measures approximately 54 meters in length and 9 meters in width, and it is constructed of steel. Over the years, many divers have explored her, and it is evident that she is no longer in pristine condition as she rests. Nevertheless, it remains a very beautiful wreck that everyone visiting Karlskrona should see. It is possible to enter the wreck, but it is important to ensure you have the appropriate experience and equipment. Since she is located in open waters, the site can be quite sensitive to weather conditions, and the currents can also be strong on the way down.

She sank to the bottom OSO of Utklippan on September 29, 2000. At the time, she was en route from Karlshamn to Gdansk carrying macadam. The ship settled upright at a depth of 18 meters, but after a storm in 2005, she capsized and now rests upside down. All cabins, masts, and superstructures were crushed and are now scattered around the wreck. On the starboard side, there is a crack that allows for potential entry.

Torkö Quarry https://navlex.com/properties/torko-quarry/ https://navlex.com/properties/torko-quarry/#respond Wed, 03 Jun 2026 00:29:31 +0000 https://navlex.com/properties/torko-quarry/ Directions
Turn off at the roundabout towards Listerby. Continue straight on the road until you see the sign for Bökenäs Camping, where you will turn left. Then, simply follow the road straight ahead, crossing the bridge to Torkö, and stop outside the metal gate to unload. After that, follow the gravel path (walking trail) for about 600 meters until you arrive.

Diving Description
An old stone quarry that was utilized during World War II. It was filled at some point during the 1970s. Choose a suitably low entry point as there are cliffs surrounding the area. It is an easy dive with large areas to swim, featuring some small fish and a few unusual shellfish, as well as a large machine deck to observe. Additionally, there are various pieces of debris to explore.

Considerations
Ensure to drive the cars back after unloading and park in a legal spot to avoid complaints and fines. Cows are often present on the island, so individuals with a fear of cows may want to reconsider visiting. Furthermore, there is a significant temperature difference in the summer, ranging from 20-25 degrees at the surface to 4 degrees at the bottom.

The wreck Klykach https://navlex.com/properties/the-wreck-klykach/ https://navlex.com/properties/the-wreck-klykach/#respond Wed, 03 Jun 2026 00:29:30 +0000 https://navlex.com/properties/the-wreck-klykach/ The wreck is situated at a depth of approximately 3 to 12 meters, with the majority lying in shallower waters, although parts of the trawl and sections of the wreck are located deeper, around 10 to 12 meters. It is a very accessible wreck for divers, offering a wealth of sights from the Latvian trawler that sank during the winter of 1991/1992. The engine, drive shaft with propeller, and other components are scattered over a relatively small area. In clear visibility, one can navigate over the wreck site and identify a significant portion of the wreck before diving in. Surrounding the wreck area is a beautiful sandy bottom, which is suitable for training dives at an appropriate depth.

This is a weather-sensitive diving area.

Ship-wreck https://navlex.com/properties/ship-wreck/ https://navlex.com/properties/ship-wreck/#respond Wed, 03 Jun 2026 00:29:27 +0000 https://navlex.com/properties/ship-wreck/ The eastern side of Rollsö, approximately 15 meters from the shore, is located outside the yellow prohibition sign.

The steamship Pius, constructed in 1865 at the Motala workshop, was originally built as a cargo vessel for canal traffic. It was sold to Nettraby lead factory, owned by Per Palen. The ship sank sometime around 1922-23. Its dimensions are 18.36 * 5.22 * 1.83 meters. It is upright on the seabed, facing towards the land/west, resting on a muddy bottom at a depth of three meters.

The wreck is extremely fragile. Please be cautious of sharp metal and do not break it apart.
